One of our chickens looks sickly and appears to have lost a lot of weight. The other chickens are pecking it and chashing it away from feed etc. Our chickens free range with an organic layer supplement. How do we determine what might be wrong with her?

Hello. This is Dr. Hill. Chicken politics are pretty harsh sometimes. Is it possible that the other hens are not allowing her access to food? Can you post a picture of her?

Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I will take a picture and post. She has access to several feeders and can feed at will throughout the day, but when they all come together in the evening before going back into the coop, is when they chase her away. She looks to be about half the weight of the other chickens.
Bird Veterinarian: Kelly Hill, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Has she started laying yet? Was she vaccinated for Marek's at one day of age? What do you feed? How big is your flock?

Ask Your Own Bird Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
She has been laying for months now. I do not know if she was vaccinated. We feed an Organic layer feed. We have 9 chickens.
Bird Veterinarian: Kelly Hill, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

okay. Thank you. If you did not specifically ask for her to be vaccinated, then she is likely not. The best way to determine what is wrong with her is to have a physical examination with your local veterinarian. For the health of the flock, she should have some bloodwork and a fecal exam. Many times only one chicken will show clinical signs with a disease that will impact the entire flock. Do you have a local veterinarian for your chickens? If not post your city and state and I will find one for you.
