He ate a turkey bone on thanksgiving and has had somewhat bloody loose stool since. It appears that clots were discarded today. He is acting normal. Should I be concerned?

I'm sorry - my pet is a dog

Friend, when we see blood in the stool this could be a sign of inflammation in the large intestines which could be secondary to the bone. Or, the bone could be obstructed in the gastrointestinal tract. The only way to find out if the bone is obstructed is by taking an x-ray. If this was my dog I would take an x-ray; if the bone is obstructed and perforates the intestinal tract the outcome is likely fatal. For this reason, it is best to err on the side of caution. In the meantime, this is what you can do:

1- Do not give things like Pepto Bismol or Imodium.

2- No food or water for 6-8 hours, need to give his gastrointestinal tract time to rest. Then, offer a small amount of water followed by a diet of rice (75%) and boiled boneless chicken or ground beef (25%) until the stool is back to normal then wean him back into his regular diet.

3- Supplement with a probiotic, these are friendly bacterias that help with regularity and inflammation. You can buy this over the counter in any pet store.

4- Follow up with your family veterinarian for a hands on examination.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service it is how I get compensated. See you again soon!
