Customer Question
Gday Dr. Pat....

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with the bird?

Gday Dr Pat. We have a Rhode Island red/ Eyesabrown? mix hen 6 months old. It has settled ok with other birds we have but a few days ago I noticed it was limping a little. This happened for a couple of days then I noticed her on third day squatting down unable to walk at all . She cant put weight on her left foot as the claws are all bunched up tightly and unable to unclench the claw. Is there anything that can be done please. ?

Veterinarian's Assistant: Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

No, there is no apparent wound . seems it is a normal claw just closed tightly.

Veterinarian's Assistant: The Expert will ask you more detailed questions to find out what is causing this. What is the bird's name?

Bung. :)

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the bird?

Not really, it seems the upper leg was sore to touch. she is eating if food is put in front of her. Her eyes are clear and alert even when squatting seems to favor or leans to the sore leg/claw side.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on your hen, please?

There are a number of considerations when unilateral paresis (weakness)/paralysis has arisen - a fractured/dislocated leg, soft tissue trauma, and Marek's disease (herpesvirus) needs to be considered. I would need to examine her leg hands-on in order to detect an injury. Marek's is usually diagnosed by its clinical symptoms or necropsy. Please take a look at this link and inparticular the hen with one leg forward and the other backward and let me know if that hen resembles yours: http://www.birdhealth.com.au/mareks-disease
