Customer Question
My sons cockatiel fell...

My sons cockatiel fell off his perch. We only got him 2 days ago from a petstore so this is all new to us.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the bird?

Is it normal for birds to fall? I'm just worried there may be something wrong with him. We haven't been able to take him to a vet yet to get a checkup. We don't know if his behaviour is normal or if something is wrong.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the bird?

He leans forward and down on his perch a lot

A sick bird is a fluffed bird, they will sit lower on perch, have changes to droppings.

Eyes look sleepy, lean forward on perch to balance better, if you can feel his keel or breast bone, feel for muscle mass vs feels skinny.

I'm concerned about his eating and drinking. I can't seem to get pictures uploaded.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
he has only had 2 poops today, but when he is on his perch he does look sleepy. We have re -placed his food and water dishes into a higher position and hung a seed stick from the top of the cage which he does seem to be eating a bit
Bird Veterinarian: DrRoyC, Bird Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Cockatiels do not drink much, as a desert bird, Not Eating is a concern we both have.

the stress of coming into a new home is a lot to deal with.

aav.org has an avian vet locator

cockatiel should have 10-17 droppings/day. He is not eating enough to make the stool

I won't be able to get him to an avian vet until late next week at the earliest as the closest one is 120km away
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
we did put fruit into his cage that he has nibbled on.
Bird Veterinarian: DrRoyC, Bird Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Understand...Try to move to a smaller room where can keep temp 85-90 F. move perches down lower, same with food & water. Food variety is Good

ok. we weren't sure if his behaviour was illness or stress
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
we will keep an eye on things and keep his cage in the bedroom where it is quiet and warm
Bird Veterinarian: DrRoyC, Bird Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Stress of coming into a new home is a Big factor, which in turn taxes the body making a new bird very sucsceptible to illness. give lots of TLC
