My yellow collared macaw seems to be having trouble with her

Customer Question

My yellow collared macaw seems to be having trouble with her feet. Keeps feet outstretched, avoiding perches. Over 20 years old, eating and drinking seems normal.

Linda, the important differential diagnoses for such a presentation at Sweet Pea's age include articular gout, arthritis, and pododermatitis (bumblefoot).

Chronic renal insufficiency should be considered when gout (deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints) is found. These crystals provoke an inflammatory response that causes the swelling and pain associated with articular gout. Birds may have a shifting lameness and the toes are often held in an extended position rather than curled around the perch.

Arthritis - inflammation of the joints - can result from traumatic injuries, septic inflammation, degenerative changes, or neoplasia.

Pododermatitis refers to an inflamed and often infected lesion on the plantar surface of the foot.

Treatment is available for all of the above. You're going to need an avian vet (please see here: to perform a thorough physical exam on Sweet Pea and then treat appropriately. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Sweet Pea is on antibiotic and anti inflammatory med. Favoring left foot, though no visible damage. Try for one week and see if there is any difference. Not crazy about the meds, but she enjoyed the car ride.

Well that's good to hear! I've never taken my birds for a car ride. Maybe I should. Please keep me posted. I want to know how Sweet Pea responds to therapyl
