My hen looked like she got her eye pecked out. It is swollen

Customer Question

My hen looked like she got her eye pecked out. It is swollen shut. Now seems like the other eye is swollen shut. She's blind now. Can I treat this infection or is she too far gone?

It's very difficult for me to assess eye injury and prognose from here but there would be no harm in instilling the over the counter ophthalmic antibiotic ointment Terramycin* (available in many pet/feed stores or online) thrice daily into both eyes for a minimum of 10 days. Injecting this hen daily (or dosing her orally with the injectable solution) with tylosin in the form of Tylan-50** available in your local feed store at a dose of 20-30 mg/lb once daily for 5-7 days would be reasonable as well particularly if her eyes represent an upper respiratory infection and her being pecked was due to her being ill rather than her being pecked causing the swelling.*** respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
