I place head trauma patients in a dark, quiet area at an environmental temperature of 75F. I treat with IV crystalloid fluid therapy and administer mannitol concomitantly. Mannitol is a sugar that causes a diuresis - a loss of fluid in the body and, hence, shrinking of inflamed brain tissue. This therapy is controversial, however, according to Dr. Pat - a board certified avian vet on this site. It's best that an avian vet (please see here: take a look at such a patient. A thorough physical exam may reveal additional trauma that requires additional therapy. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
