My lovebird's foot has turned a greyish color from its usual

Customer Question

My lovebird's foot has turned a greyish color from its usual pink. She favors it and hobbles around her cage. Any idea of what might cause this?

I suspect that you're seeing dry gangrene develop - tissue necrosis (death) due to vascular compromise to her foot. This usually occurs due to trauma above the foot or strangulation of her leg above the foot. Can you handle her and thoroughly check her leg for threads, string, etc. that might be encircling her leg?
