Our parakeet has a prolapsed oviduct and egg protruding but

Customer Question

Our parakeet has a prolapsed oviduct and egg protruding but cannot pass it. We have tried calling all ER vet clinics but they do not treat parakeets. From what we have read, we are in an emergency situation and all info suggests she is in great pain. PLEASE HELP - WHAT DO WE DO NEXT? We have run a steam shower and put KY jelly around the cloaca but nothing has changed. She successfully passed her first egg just prior to us hearing her in her cage. THANK YOU!

If you can see the egg, you can try to manually "express" it out of the cloaca. It's best not to grasp the egg itself lest you break it (although that might be necessary) but, instead, pinch the area just above the egg to see if you can jostle it downward. You'll need to hold Gibby on her back in your palm surrounded by a warm cloth. The KY jelly needs to be placed inside her cloaca as well as coating whatever oviduct/cloaca is exposed. Let me know how you get on.
