My African grey, Oscar, ate part of small entenmann's

Customer Question

Hi Dr. Dan, my African grey, Oscar, ate part of small entenmann's chocolate chip cookie. The "chocolate" ingredients include chocolate liquor and cocoa butter. He is acting normal; ate the cookie about 2.5 hours ago.

Thank you for your question, I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you but I just logged on for the first time today at this moment. With birds generally when chocolate is eaten if there are toxic effets they will usually be seen very quickly (usually an hour or more) due to a bird's rapid metabolism. Given the small amount of chocolate eaten this is likely not going to be a problem from this point forward. If the whole item eaten was just baking chocolate, then that can be a probelm, however since this was likely mostly cookie and a little chocolate, then Oscar will be fine. Dr. Dan
