GA- sa I have a chicken that suddenly after 3 years, will not leave

Customer Question

I have a chicken that suddenly after 3 years, will not leave the laying nest. She "fluffs" up and is vocal when I pick her up to take her outside. I have 4 chickens and they seem to attack her if they get a chance. She is very vocal now. I don't know what is wrong with her. Her voice seems alittle hoarse. She has lost weight also. Don't know if I should put her down or not. The other chickens are fine. Egg production is very slow this year.

Hello I'm Dr. Bob. I'm sorry to read of your hen's condition. It sounds as if she's become "broody" and the weight loss and change in voice are very well likely to be due to broodiness, a hormonally induced behavior pattern. How long has she been this way?
