Is there a specific type of surgery that you are looking for guidelines, or just general guidelines regarding probiotics in Post-operative patients?
Ask Your Own Bariatrics Question

I am conducting an integrative research review regarding
Effectiveness of Probiotics in Decreasing Post-op Infection in Patients who underwent Abdominal Surgery.
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
mainly abdominal surgeries.

I would start with the review article “Gut Microbiome, surgical complications and probiotics” in Annals of Gastroenterolgy by Stavrour and Kotzampassi if you haven’t read that one yet.

I am trying to find guidlines to include in my articles.....such as maybe CDC, world health organization related to probiotic use and post-op infections.
Bariatric Physician: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago
i Think research is still too new for any formal guidelines. I haven’t seen any published by ACS (American College of Surgeons) or CDC or NIH

I also don’t see any from Royal College of Surgeons either

ok what about infections in general, not surgical infections.
Bariatric Physician: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago
None that I’ve come across yet either, but again, new area of research and guidelines usually run a good 10+ years behind. I also don’t see any guidelines from Royal Australian College of Surgeons. That said, obviously the research coming out seems favorable on their use.

can you brielfy explain probitics and how they work in reducing post-op infections
Bariatric Physician: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago
Probiotics in general are supplements of naturally occuring bacteria in the gut and can come in pills or in fermented foods such as kefir, cultured yogurt or foods like kimchi or saukerkraut.Probiotics help reestablish normal gut flora balance after bowel surgery which is thought to help the immune system and prevent infection either by enhancing the normal immune system or through competive selection (more good bacteria means less chance of “bad” bacteria developing in the gut.

what are the different type of probiotics currently in use? reference ?
Bariatric Physician: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago
Usually either Lactobacillus (multiple strains but acipholius or rhamonas GG are most common available) or Bifidobacterim bifidum. There is a review article by Fijian in the following journal https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4053917/

how do probiotics work?
Bariatric Physician: Doctor John MD, Board Certified MD replied 7 months ago
In regards ***** ***** infection? Most likely prevent damage to mucosal lining of the gut which prevents infection from other bacterial entering through damaged mucosal lining.Although we also see a decrease in hospital acquired PNA in patients that are placed on probiotics at start of their hospitalization for non-respiratory issue, so also may be some large impact on immune system as well
