Those exercises you do with your physical therapist are great, and I would encourage you to continue them after surgery. Your surgeon will let you know when it is safe to resume exercise. With my patients, I keep them away from exercise for at least a week after surgery. If they look great and are healing normally at the one-week post-op visit, I will tell them to get back to exercise. Most people will not be able to work their abdominal muscles significantly for 4-6 weeks after surgery, but treadmill, elliptical, bicycle, and many strength-training exercises are ok.
A lot of the core exercises will be hard for you to do for a few weeks, principally due to the fact that they work your abdominal muscles. Core exercises that work your back muscles will be ok. Let pain be your guide; if it hurts, don't do that exercise.
