This answer was rated:

I cosigned a student loan for my son.Is this dischargable in bankruptcy? I realize it's not for the student.

cfortunato :

Hi - my name is XXXXX XXXXX I'm a Bankruptcy and Consumer Protection attorney here to assist you.

cfortunato :

Unfortunately, student loans are not dischargeable - whether the debtor is the student or only a co-signor for the student loan.

cfortunato :

Hopefully, having your other debts discharged will make it easier for you to pay the student loan (if the student is not paying it).

Customer:

I stheir no legal option to get out of this under bankruptcy?

cfortunato :

Student loans can be discharged for someone who cannot work because of a disability that is permanent.

Customer:

OK Thanks

cfortunato :

You're welcome! And I am really sorry I could not give you better news.
