I have spoken with a bankruptcy lawyer but have not paid the retainer yet. When can I stop making credit card payments. I can no longer keep up with the payments.

You can stop any time. However, if you get 3-6 months behind the creditors will beging to pursue litigation to enforce the debts. Thus, you should be fairly certain about filing bankruptcy before stopping your payments.
