Hi, I am a special education teacher with over 23 years experience in autism and developmental disabilties. I am also the parent of an adult daughter who is on the spectrum. The decision to medicate is always a difficult one and should be after all behavioral techniques have been tried. If he is just starting to have problems at school, you might want to check the environment to see if there have been any changes (new staff, room changes, new noises, new lighting, etc.). Sometimes a new person's voice is enough to cause behavioral issues. A psychiatrist who is familar with autism spectrum disorder would be the person to see about medications. Our daughter takes several for anxiety, but the meds are paired with constant behavioral interventions and techniques for her to self manage. We promise a lot of positive events for good behavior, and we "charge" her for losing temper and acting inappropriately. We try to offer her choices a lot and it seems to give her a sense of control and that we honor her decisions.
