Hi,
I am Susan McPhail, M.Ed. I've been teaching special education for over 23 years and am the parent of an adult daughter who has autism. I have had training and conducted training in a variety of interventions designed to alleviate issues that are faced by people with autism/Asperger's syndrome. I have served as an expert witness and advocated for people who are on the spectrum of autism for over 20 years. I am currently a doctoral candidate and the focus of my dissertation is autism training for teachers.
One of the hallmark characteristics of Asperger's and autism is the inability to understand and read others' emotions. It is referred to as Theory of Mind and people on the spectrum of autism are not able to do this. From the other symptoms that you have described, I do not think that your son is on the spectrum of autism. Of course, I am not a diagnostician and if you still have doubts, I would not hesitate to take him to be evaluated by a reputable therapist who is familiar with autism spectrum disorder. Many doctors who are not familiar with autism and the wide variety of symptoms that accompany it, may not recognize the disorder. I am adding two web sites that deal with Asperger's syndrome. One is a test for the disorder and, although it is not meant to diagnose, it will yield a strong indication of the presence of Asperger's. The other site includes a lot of information on Asperger's and may help you to decide whether or not to pursue a diagnosis. The child psychiatrist was correct to tell you that teachers need to try to understand him and be patient in order for him to succeed in school. I wish you the best.
