Hi. I have been looking at a caravan that was listed on Facebook marketplace. The seller has now indicated that they want to use eBay to complete the transaction. As the live in Darwin and I am in NSW they have indicated that they will transport the carayusing a voucher. They have also indicated that the caravan is being stored at a eBay holding facility and that any money will be held in a eBay trust account until I have checked the van out. The owner of the caravan has not yet sent registration information so I can do revs check. There just seem to be too many holes in this sale. Looking forward to your response. I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble.

Wayne, you should proceed carefully. If you are uncomfortable about paying through a nonbank process, then what you should do is inform the seller that you'll only purchase the goods through a financial institution. In addition what you also should do is have the caravan inspected by a mechanic to make sure the caravan does exist. Then check the personal property securities register to make sure there's no registration over the caravan. That way you can protect your legal interest. If you're going to spend a significant amount of money on this caravan, it might be worthwhile, even taking a trip to inspect the caravan yourself. That way you are purchasing something you have personally expected. Therefore, you can avoid any problems later.

I understand how that could be frustrating.

Wayne, in addition to my comments above, you should also do verification of identity on the seller. That is especially so where you are purchasing from a private party. That way, if you choose, not to personally inspect the caravan or have a mechanic inspect the caravan, then you can be sure that you are dealing with a resident of Australia. And if needs be you can pursue the matter through the course, if necessary, if something goes wrong.

Concerning this caravan that you are considering purchasing, it is best that you transfer money through the normal financial institutions to protect that purchase. However you need to make sure that that caravan actually exists and you should engage an independent mechanic to inspect that caravan. That way you can have confidence the caravan actually is in good condition.
