You can seek an adjournment, but in circumstances where you have not complied with any of the orders, it will be difficult. HOWEVER, you needed a place to stay, the court should take some sympathy for that, the child still need to see you regardless of the outcome.
Adjournment applications are standard in these matters. I would however go to court with some evidence on the housing situation and prove that you were proactive in that alone.
So in short, it is not too controversial to ask for an adjournment.
