On Monday 8/04/19, I reached out to Westpac to order a new card reader as the old one wasn't working anymore. Jameel ordered it for me (8/04/19). The new card reader was supposed to arrive before Friday ( 12/04/19 ) so I had it to attend the markets on that weekend. On the Wednesday (10/04/19) I have received a call from Verifone telling me they had an issue with the address so the card reader couldn't be delivered by Start track. I clarified that the card reader was supposed to arrive at the Westpac branch in Crown St Sydney ( from my investigation with Start Track it seems they were not given this information when the unit was ordered). However, that it was addressed to Makia Pty Ltd with no address. By Friday I had no news on the card reader, so at around 4 pm I went to the branch myself. The card reader didn't arrive, and I have asked Jameel to follow up on this case. This issue took around 45 minutes and he came back to me saying I wouldn't have been able to receive the card reader by Saturday (the day I had booked a market stall). He gave me a reference number, and asked that I use it to track the parcel. I left the bank and called the Star Track to check if I was able to go and pick it up myself. However, when I rang, they told me the reference number that Westpac had given me wasn't right. At this point, I decided to go back to the bank to check the reference number. When I entered the bank, it was around 4.50pm, and I asked to speak with Jameel as he was already familiar with the issue. I was told he was out, but he would be back soon. I waited for him, and he came back just before 5 pm with his grocery shopping in his hands. I explained to him I wanted to find out if I could pick my parcel up from Star Track and that I needed the correct Star Track reference number and could he check it for me because the previous one was wrong. Instead of helping me, he directed me to ring the merchant assistance and deal with the issue. While on the phone, he started to invite me to leave the branch as it was after 5 pm and they were closing. I was trying to talk with the person on the phone, and he was keep telling me that I had to leave the bank because it was closing. He told me I had to leave the bank immediately as he had an appointment to attend and I was holding him up. At that time he also called the security guard who approached me, and when I was trying to write a ref number down, he forcefully took the pen I was using to write down the number directly from my hand. From there, the situation started to escalate as they became more aggressive. I was agitated, confused and upset at the way they were treating me as if I was a criminal and not a Westpac customer. Moreover, I was more focused on finding out about the card reader but to no avail. The guard began to ask me for my driver's license, which I had in my hand. When I said no, he became aggressive and tried to grab it from my hand. As a reaction, I hid the driving license under my armpit and he tried to reach it under my armpit, which at time I felt he was assaulting me and was increasing my anxiety as I felt extremely afraid and threatened by him. At some point (I can't honestly remember when) the security guard also asked me how long have I been the country, this question upset me even more as I felt he was judging me based on my race and accent. During the whole time this was going on Jameel kept yelling at me saying I had to leave and that he was about to call the police. So, I invited him to call them if he felt he had a case to evict me from the bank, so he did call the Police. Once the police arrived, they saw that I wasn't a threat to anyone or the bank and at that time one of the officers told the other one “they should have gone to do real cops' job”. After that, I was upset about the way they treated me as it was my fault if the card reader didn't arrive and that Westpac had not botched up the delivery address to the bank. I needed that Card Reader … read more
