Hi Miriam,Thank you for your email.Your internship was terminated as your site supervisor did not think, based on previous experience through the semester, that you would be able to complete your internship hours in time. At the point your placement was terminated, May 17, there was approximately 3 weeks left to earn hours. On this date, if Celine was being very generous in confirming the hours you had completed, you still had 60 hours left to earn and, again, based on her experience through the semester and knowing that you were also in paid employment and not available on Thursdays and Fridays, and in addition to your other course commitments, she did not see a way for you to earn the needed hours in this compacted period of time.Throughout the semester, dating back as early as Thursday March 22, Celine raised her concerns with you about your ability to complete your internship hours on time, as in 3 weeks, you had not yet completed 10 hours. On April 10, Celine also arranged a meeting with you to discuss your internship hours and noted that you needed to get started to get all of your hours done in time. During your correspondence with Celine on May 12, Celine calculates that you have (if she is being generous with your hours testing participants) that you have interned for 40 hours in 8 weeks. You believed you had done about 50 hours at this point, which Celine asks you for more details about.It was at this point that Celine reached out to me and expressed her concerns. In addition to not progressing in a timely manner with your internship hours, Celine also advised of at least one occasion where you had been late to keep your test subjects waiting for a half an hour after the scheduled meeting time and that this was very unprofessional.During our phone call, we discussed whether or not there was a way forward with your placement and Celine and Hayley agreed to meet with you later in the week to discuss your internship again. After this meeting, Celine and Hayley did not feel confident that you would be able to reach your remaining hours through the last weeks of the semester. I did not keep my subject waiting a half an hour. The appointment was 4 o clock, I arrived at 4:07pm. There is a sign on the door that says to knock and if no one answers to please wait.
On the second occasion, I was out of town and was worried that I might be late. Professionally, I recognize the importance of the study that I was responsible for running as well as the importance of communication with all parties involved. Therefore, I emailed the participant earlier in the day, as a precaution, if they could come in at 4:30pm rather than 4pm. I left my location on time to arrive to USYD at 4pm. However, transportation was late. I immediately emailed Hayley informing her to come into the lab at 4pm just in case the participant did not receive my email and, due to transportation, I may be unable to make it on time.
If Celine was ever unhappy about my professionalism, she did not inform me of this throughout the internship. I was not given any feedback on my work or my professionalism prior to the termination of my internship. I only received positive feedback. For instance, Hayley encouraged me after running the study, “Looks like you handled it perfectly so thanks heaps for that!” and “Thanks for today, sounds like it all went well!”. This was the type of feedback I received throughout the semester.

Celine asked me to give her more details about my time log, I did not have a chance to give her these details as I was terminated before I could specify what my hours consisted of.
I am not sure what phone call Dana is referring to: “During our phone call, we discussed whether or not there was a way forward with your placement and Celine and Hayley agreed to meet with you later in the week to discuss your internship again.” I did not speak to Dana before Friday May 18, after I received the email that I was terminated from my internship. I asked her to call me as I was surprised by this email. In the phone call, I only asked Dana how many weeks are left for the internship. She responded that the internship is supposed to be completed on June 8th. However, there is “no negotiation, your internship is over and you have no say in it.”Are there parts of the decision below that are specifically unreasonable or unfair? If so why? Are there some circumstances or issues that you think were not taken into account?
Throughout my internship, Celine never asked me to show her any evidence of completion of my hours or asked me to log my hours. I logged my hours on my own.
In the first three weeks of the internship, I had completed hours. But, because Celine did not ask me for a time log, she assumed that I did not complete any. I had completed hours in: reading the forensic psychology book, meeting with Celine and Hayley, and practicing the script for the Volcano Study.
For the week of the internship I was only assigned to read psychology content
The volcano study that I was trained to do and supposed to be running was not carried out as planned because the necessary materials were not obtained.
I was also not given a deadline to complete the matching and therefore did not know that this was an urgent matter.
I was unable to attend lab meetings for the first 3 weeks because I had tutorial at the same time. This was very important to me, so I did all in my ability to attend the meeting including: reaching out to Hayley and politely inquiring of her if it is possible that the time and date could be changed (shown on email on March 19), reaching out to Kristin to see if I had the ability to change my class schedule and attend a different tutorial for my class (shown on the email on March 19), and reaching out to my professor, informing her that I have an important weekly internship meeting that I would like to attend and if it is viable that I attend a different tutorial, my professor told me that I could. Thus, I attended lab meetings every week starting April 17. (included this to show that I care about the internship/my hours)
Celine told me that I could do more hours one week and less another, so my goal was to complete my hours by the end of the term. These all factor into why my hours have been low.
I assured Celine that I would complete my hours. I informed Celine, in response to her email of concern on May 22nd that, I was enrolled in courses that all ended early. My first two courses were completed week 5 and week 6. My final course completed May 31st. Thus, I have the time to make up my hours. But I was hindered before I could complete them.
