I'm currently at a women's refuge in Perth having left a
Thank you. I'm currently at a women's refuge in Perth having left a domestic violence relationship of seven years. I am rebuilding my life, trying very hard to get back into the workforce etc. I take full responsibility for not leaving my ex long ago. However, he dictated my life. Any money I did earn went straight to his bank account, of which he gave me an allowance. He provided financially for most of our relationship however I did everything for him - cleaned house, cooked meals, laundered and ironed his clothes, helped renovate his houses, regular washing and polishing of his cars etc. He often hit me and played mind games, and weekly kicked me outside to sleep often for days with no phone money sufficient clothing toiletries food or water. Unfortunately I have no proof of this just a few witnesses of me sleeping outside and some of the verbal stuff. I am bankrupt in NZ because he refused to allow me to work and pay off my student loan, saying I had to focus on fixing my brain. I had some prior existing issues with Depression and Anxiety and he did pay 12000 for me to attend a health retreat in USA which did help a lot. However on returning to Australia he again began to hit me, send me outside, and play mind games again and the Depression returned. I left the relationship 2 months ago and despite encouragement from friends did not want to take matters through the courts. I do not need revenge or even fairness. However while I am struggling day to day to pay my rent in a refuge with not even a car (he bought 5 vehicles while were living together) he is holidaying with family in Melbourne and living life up. He made me sign a very unofficial affidavit saying that I owed him thousands of dollars (can't remember exact figures sorry) and said he would produce it in court if I ever left him and "tried to get money or anything". He has threatened to have me deported for going overseas to the US while bankrupt in NZ. He can't and deep down he knows this. Honestly do I have any rights at all in this situation? Just wondering for myself. … read more
