I fell into a scam. Authorized push payment. I was
I was threatened last week about getting involved in a crime over the phone (they claimed to be international police). I was told that I had to transfer all my money to a 'government account' in HK. I stupidly transferred around $57,000 AUD in total (one on 13/10, one on 15/10) to an account in HSBC HK. I realized that it was a scam 2 days later (on 17/10), reported the police, and contacted both my bank (CBA) and the recipient bank. So far CBA staff said they will investigate but I haven't heard anything from them yet. At the same time I hear from some sort of 'fund recovery' company who claim to be able to recover my assets by holding the recipient bank into account (ie. how come they let criminals open so many accounts to scam people etc.). So pretty much they think by holding the recipient bank into account the bank will return me the money and claim the loss from its insurance. I wonder whether that's even possible and what else can I do in my case (if there's any). The funds I sent were confirmed to be in the recipient's account by the scammers last Fri, and I got in touch with the HK police yesterday and they said they can't freeze the recipient account because there's no money in the account to freeze. So it's certain that the money has been shifted. I wonder if there's anything I can do to (potentially) get my money back. I don't mind paying some money hiring a lawyer to hold the recipient or the bank into account, but if the person already ran out of HK or has spent all the money, I still can't get anything back can I? Should I just move on from this, let the HK police to investigate (the probably never will), or should I keep fighting for it? from 16/10 when they confirmed they received the money till now they already have 1.5 week's time to shift the money. I'm not sure whether it'll be too late for any tracing or recovery to be done.… read more
