My father passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. As you would imagine this was hard on the entire family and particularly my mother. After his death she spent considerable time and effort ensuring everything was in order in terms of transferring things into her name and cancelling things no longer required. Anyway, she has just received some direct marketing material in the mail from a company trying to rent commercial property and offering this to my father who they address as a Doctor, which he is not. She thought this was very strange and rang them to ask why they thought he was a Dr and how they got his home address details and they told her they got it from Google. Google have been heavily advertising a new service called "Google My Business" which is designed to replace the yellow pages as a formal advertising listing for businesses where you can provide details on your business for people to find if they search for those types of services on Google. Next she received a letter directly from Google promoting "Google My Business" and asking my father once again to advertise with them to promote his medical practice, non of which exists. My mother at this stage is getting quite distressed and given there is no easy means to contact Google she has written a letter to a name provided on the correspondence she received from Google. This is a mess and even if they delete it I want to know why it got listed in the first place and how they can list a business with my parents home address and phone number as the contact details, this is an invasion of privacy and endangers my mother who is now a widower living on her own. Sorry, I'm starting to get worked up myself over this... do Google have a case to answer here, I would expect them to compensate her for the distress they have caused.
