Can I take the Rural Fire Service to court for defamation of character

You can sue if the allegations was based on evidence that was not perceived as being true.

Defamation law is very pro defendant. If they have a reasonable belief that what was said was true then they have a defense.

If they gained the evidence from JIRTs or another relevant third party, then sadly they may have a defense.
