We feel that the law firm previously handling our matter before the magistrates court has not provided the right level of service and charged excessively for very little action. We have cancelled our agreement with them and requested a cost assessment over a year ago, they have contacted us yesterday informing us that they have not filed this request and to make them an offer regarding settlement of the outstanding amounts, as well as charging us for the cost assessment not done... What do we do now?

You should elect to have the costs assessed by the Qld Law Society.

Here are the details:

They have the jurisdiction to deal with the matter and make a judgement in light of your concerns.

Lawyers must give a cost agreement. They must attend to this when requested / when they commence work in any event.

More than likely the law society will reduce the fee at the very least.

Please accept.

Hi there Daniel

The link you gave me appears to be for solicitors and society members only, can we still look for advice from them?

The lawyers in question have come back to us and demanded payment of their invoices as well as handing it over to a debt collection agency.

Yes they will still assist.

They will look into the debt
