Complicated. Queensland. Purchased a property 8 years ago,
Purchased a property 8 years ago, an during the course of time made 3 seperate alterations, with appropriate Council permits and required inspections. All were passed as acceptable.Recently tried to sell said property but sale fell through because Council identified that the building failed a building inspection 22 years ago. Interestingly Council has knowingly allowed the property to be occupied for 25 years and diligently collected the rates (in excess of $3,000 per year), knowing that the building was apparently not Building Code Compliant. Purchaser withdrew from his contract. Council bears no liability, or responsibility.... It is now my responsibility to make the property code compliant and obtain all of the required certifications required. Designer no longer exists, structural supplier no longer exists, window supplier no longer exists, builder no longer exists, and I understand from the neighbour that it was an owner/builder situation.Looks like we have a house that is not building code compliant, I have very little chance of making it Code Compliant...... why does Council get away with a situation like this, just because they are a large organisation with better financial resources than myself..... … read more
