The fees do not appear to be unreasonable.
Most Solicitors charge between 400 and 500 per hour plus GST and there is also the cost of the reports.
The Solicitor should provide him with a full estimate of costs so that he knows what he is getting himself into.
The only other thing I can suggest to you is to contact the Law Society of WA and ask to be referred to criminal Solicitors in your sons area and ask them what they would charge.
Your son may also need a barrister to assist.

The agreement for costs should be with the Solicitor not any middle man. It is a requirement of the Law Society that a Cost Agreement and disclosure be provided to all clients.
