they have to re-issue the invoice correctly if they want you to pay the GST and they have to cancel the original one.

if the work is sub-standard you need to take that up with them and either sue them for the work to be rectified or to compensate you for having to have it repaired

You should get a report from an independent party to show that the work is substandard and what it would cost to have ti repaired.

They tell me that the amount will be left in outstanding and possible legal action will be taken if we don't pay. I don't know if the original invoice has been cancelled.

they cannot claim the GST unless they cancel the original invoices and issue new ones.
