Hello, what you need to do is to simply obain a valid marriage certificate from the state of Nevada for your marriage to be valid in Australia.

it is a simple procedure that you obtain the document and have it served to Births deaths and marriages in Australia.
Daniel :
The celebrant (or Elvis!) may offer to forward the certificate, however you should also obtain a copy also.

I have been told that I have a choice of a certified copy of the certificate or an apostille from the Nevade Secretary of State, is there a preference for Australian BDM service?

No not at all as long as it is registerable.

So, from your answer, it appears that there aren't any downsides for marrying overseas, just get my hands on a registerable document to bring home - am I understanding this correctly? What about the remote and hopefully never going to happen event of the marriage breaking down in the long distance future, does getting married overseas complicate issues in separation - (got to ask the realistic question but be hopeful of a happy ending at the same time !! )

There is no downside really, the marriage will be filed at BDM and it will become valid. If everything falls apart you are simply subject to the normal requirements of divorce in Australia.
