Yes, you should have a lawyer attend with your son during the hearing. These types of hearing are often difficult, and the last thing your son needs right now is for the AVO to be extended.
To convince the Magistrate that extending the AVO is not necessary, your son's lawyer will have to show that Jake is no longer in danger from your son, and that your son wants nothing more to do with that boy.
With a lawyer appearing alongside your son at the hearing, I would estimate your son's chances of not having the AVO extended to be around 66%. Without a lawyer, this would drop to about 33%.
