Yes, I believe that you could be potentially classified as a long term casual and you may have been discriminated against in the selection process, especially if there is still work available!
Legal Aid won't help, I suggest you contact the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94 (www.fwo.gov.au) and get them to assess the merit of your claim, they may contact the employer to mediate a situation where your shift may be restored if there is a case to pursue.

Hi Laura
I would start with the Ombudsman to be frank with you, it's a free service for you and they can get a result through mediation and conciliation.
It will also help in fleshing out the issues that you could then bring to an employment lawyer to pursue if required. If you see a lawyer from the start you may not get much change out of $1000 and get to the same point the Ombudsman could achieve for you for free.
