There is no reason why you could not be eligible for Australian citizenship even taking into account your 9 months spent overseas. Although the Immigration website can be a minefield at times I hope you have at least completed the basic citizenship "wizard" which gave you an answer along the lines of your eligibility by conferral - see link below to some dates that I had entered with some assumptions on your circumstances -

As you should know you can only ever be a citizen of one country at any one time therefore becoming an Australian Citizen would require that you renounce your UK citizenship status.
The comment someone had made to you requiring 3 (sometimes 2) years to be spent in the country is usually reserved for visas where PR status has not been obtained, which is not the case with you, you are free to come and go as you please.
