Especially if this person is about to be (or has been) charged with terrorism offences. Such charges would need to be defended and a court trial could very well result. If a guilty verdict is determined then that person could spend years in jail.

A court trial is a process involving a judge who decides the matter, as well as a prosecutor and a defence lawyer.
The prosecutor is a lawyer who tries to prove that you are guilty of breaking the law. In order for him to prove this he needs evidence. Accordingly, he will show and presents his evidence to the judge.
Then your lawyer will try to find faults with the evidence, or say to the judge that the evidence provided by the prosecutor isn't strong enough to justify finding you guilty of the offence.
Then the judge decides the matter after having heard all of the evidence.
That is basically what a court trial is.
