you have a number of options:
1. Speak with a specialised Criminal Law Solicitor who is capable of handling the matter alone without a Barrister. - You should speak with the Law Society in your state in relation to a referral. This should be cheaper than a Solicitor and Barrister.
2. Speak with Legal Aid to obtain a grant. Courts will not appoint a Lawyer, unless there is a duty solicitor appointed by Legal Aid present. If they are present, they usually only deal with guilty pleas anyway.
My advice would be to speak with Legal Aid. Your son is a student and should be able to get a grant from them. Legal Aid can also appoint a Barrister for you should they wish to do so. Legal Aid also have Solicitors who specialise in criminal law who should have the ability to assist.
