I am sorry to say even though she walked out on the children and was nasty to then if the matter was to go to Court orders would be made where the children would have to spend time with their mother.
I may be in their interest to have some councelling arranged as it is clear that the children have had alot going on.
I suggest that you talk to legal aid and also have the 16 and 13 year olds talk to them as well about how they feel.
It may also be of benefit any contact between the mother and children be at a contact centre to make the children feel more secure.
