My Panasonic inverter air conditioner (model CU-E28EKR)

won't operate even when I...
my Panasonic inverter air conditioner (model CU-E28EKR) won't operate even when I put new batteries in the remote.
The remote has the word OFF displayed as well as the temp and ion.
It also shows auto against the air swing and fan
what can I do?

Have had the unit turned off at the mains overnight. I just turned it on again and still nothing.
The remote appears to be locked in the off position.
I have the operating instructions for the unit in front of me at the moment and no where does it show the OFF icon which is currently illuminated above the fan, speed and air swing icons

Have you pressed the RC button to restore default settings in the remote?

I just tried the RC button.
All icons disappear but reappear again as before, therefore no change. Still nothing works.
