My car (Holden Captiva 2008) recently started shaking

Customer Question

Good day,My car (Holden Captiva 2008) recently started shaking heavily when braking at speeds above 80kph. Braking on speeds less than 80kph gives a light vibration. I have just changed both rear and front brake pads, nothings changed. I understand it may be due to brake discs coming out of shape. Can I fix this on my own without having to take it to the mechanic? Thanks

You could have warped front and/or rear disc rotors.

What brand disc pads did you fit?

Rotor runout should be checked with a magnetic base dial indicator.

That's right, I can feel the front brake rotors are quite warped even without a dial indicator. Where to next? Is it easier to replace them or get them machined? How much are these two options may cost me?

Depends if the discs will take a machine cut, and still be above minimum thickness.

A disc machine on car is a bit more labour, compared to rotor replacement.

Typically 1 hr to replace rotors, 1.5hr to machine rotors.

About $500 for a rotor and pads job, about $250-$300 for machine and pads.

Hope this helps you.
