I have a Holden Cruze 2ltr diesel 2011, it is making a louder than normal engine noise.
JA: How old is the engine? And when was it last serviced?
Customer: 2011 model serviced last week.
JA: Are you fixing your Cruze yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: at the mechanics, when the drive belt is off the noise is not there, they believe it may be the tensioner ?
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Hello there,

It could be the tensioner, but more than likely the decoupler clutch of the alternator front pulley.

Common issue.

Thanks Gary , I will relay this to the mechanic in the morning .
So this is a common occurrence in the Holden Cruze 2ltr turbo diesel ?
Expert:  Gary replied 4 months ago.

Yes, I have done a few on Diesel Cruze.

Ask your mechanic to rock the pulley in both directions quickly by hand.

It should feel like a ratchet.

If it feels solid, it has locked up.

Some replace the whole alternator, but you can replace the drive pulley separately.

Revised pulley available from Holden spares.

Hi Gary, alternator pulley is ok, back to square one
Expert:  Gary replied 4 months ago.

So your mechanic understood what I meant about the decoupler clutch?

I have also had the harmonic balancer cause a similar noise but not as common.

The tensioner spring could also have lost some tension.

Also check tensioner pulley bearing is ok.

And last is does it have the correct length belt on there?

Hi Gary,
I am at Holden dealer today getting harmonic balancer replaced as per their diagnosis.
Expert:  Gary replied 4 months ago.

Ok, that's good your car is now getting fixed.

I have seen a balancer a few times.

Have a good day.
