I have a 1997 Holden Rodeo 2.6 litre Auto. Yesterday it

Customer Question

Hi Pearl. I have a 1997 Holden Rodeo 2.6 litre Auto. Yesterday it stopped changing gears at all. I have to lock it into 1st or 2nd to drive and reverse doesn't work at all. I gave it a full service this afternoon but no luck. The old oil was extremely dirty. Your opinion please. Thanks, Paul
JA: When was your last oil change?
Customer: Automatic oil - today. Engine - 30000 kms ago
JA: What is the model of your '97 Holden?
Customer: Series G6 LX 2.6 litre petrol
JA: Are you fixing your LX yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: So far, replaced all the transmission oil and replaced the filter in the transmission. That's all.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I just need to know if it is worth fixing.

Hi there,

Doesn't sound good, especially no reverse.

I would say you have a sprag clutch failure.

Thanks Gary. What is a sprag clutch and if that is the problem, is that big dollars to fix?
Expert:  Gary replied 8 months ago.

A Sprag is a one way clutch within an auto transmission.

A silent one way ratchet if you like.

Effectively it is a transmission rebuild to fix.

Seen many failures in Rodeo.

A transmission shop is your next option.

Generally about 3k drive in, drive out.
