If you have the grille out already, can you reach up between the radiator support panel and the A/C condenser.

You should feel the bonnet release lever that the cable would be attached to.

Push down on the bonnet slightly, while pushing the release lever to the drivers side.

Bonnet should pop open at that point.

The friction of the release lever within the bonnet catch is the cause of the high effort and eventual failure of the cable.
