Customer Question

JA: Hi. How can we help?
Customer: Hi I have an Holden Astra 2003
JA: Are you fixing your Astra yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Previously it had problems with the ignition coil.I replaced it with a new one . Then there was an issue with the mobilizer and the mechanic said the chip in the key was missing. He fixed that too Now it just drives like 10kms or less or more , not fixed and just turns off I wait a couple of minutes and it starts again
JA: Can you turn the steering wheel at all? And what about the key? Is it worn or damaged?
Customer: Now I have a new key. And when the car stops and I have to push it off the way the steering wheel is stiff as anything really hard
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: That's pretty much the only work I have done on it

Hello there,

Can you get the ECM scanned for codes please?

Astra ECM failure is fairly common now.

Is yours auto or manual transmission?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Mine is a manual
I am pretty sure the mechanic ran the scan and he said your car key has no chip, as in there was something wrong with the mobiliser. But now it just turns off and starts up again after a couple of minutes. The ECM fails and just randomly starts. ? Like I don't know

Hi again,

Do you have a Holden dealer nearby?

I have fixed many like this, could be ECM, could be CAN-BUS wiring.

Could also be a relay in the engine bay fusebox.

I just observed that when it turns off , and then I plug the key in to start it again , if I wait till the lights diminish on the display, it immediately starts
Every time
And if I try whilst they are blinking it never does
Can we conclude something?

Sounds like your immobilizer is not reading the key.

Your key does have a chip, or should have if it, if it is missing.

That could be why the immobilizer light is flashing when you turn the key on.

Has your mechanic replaced any parts yet?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
That's the problem I initially had, there was no chip in the key. But the mechanic put in the chip and programmed it.
Now I run it with that key, but it decides to just turn off. If I try turning it on when the lights are on it won't. So I plug the key in , after a couple of seconds the lights fade out and then it starts every time .
The lights I am talking about are referenced in the pic
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Just installed a new ignition coil
That's only what we changed recently

Has your vehicle been looked at by a HOLDEN Technician as yet?

They have the all the correct tools for correct diagnosis.

What tool did your mechanic use for programming?

The lights you are referring to the RH side, which aren't lit in your pic, are for traction control.

I'm wondering why the engine light and immobilizer light are not lit in the tachometer, where the charge warning light and cooling module lights are?
