I have 2001 S40 showing DTC code 76 and my mechanic can't

Customer Question

I have 2001 S40 showing DTC code 76 and my mechanic can't get the check engine light to turn off
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: stays on, it was also showing code A1 and he replaced the thermostat
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Not to fix it myself, we thought it might be related to the transmission as it has seemed to be slipping with the tranmission arrow comming on as well
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: a few issues with the transmission changing heavilly

A few times whilst driving in the wet, the transmission arrow has lit up and it has gone into what i assume is a limp home mode. I got it to go away by shifting from Drive to Park eight or so times, but the check engine light goes on. The mechanic was able to get the check engine light to go off and then it happened again a week or so later. This time it also showed the code A1 and we replaced the thermostat, but the check engine light remains on - the car drives fine.

Hi and good morning .

What code reader or scan tool did your Mechanic use .

Normally we are looking for a 4 figure code like P2099 .P0300 for example .

May even have some starting with a B C or U depending on which system is affected .

If you clear the codes or disconnect the battery this will clear codes but if no repairs are done

for the code in question the check engine warning light will come back ON when the management system rereads the malfunction

within the system .

So we need the correct code so we know what has malfunctioned .

Pleas eget codes and repost here for me to check for you.
