2011 TM Holden Barina automatic. Intermittently - several

Customer Question

2011 TM Holden Barina automatic. Intermittently - several times every few weeks - the car won't start - no engine turnover, no starter motor but lights etc OK. After waiting about 90 seconds, the car then starts normally. When it happens, often, but not always, the gear selector is frozen in park. Putting foot on brake and putting in neutral, when possible, has no effect.

Hi there,

I have had this fault before with TM Barina.

I would be checking all the engine bay and cabin instrument panel grounding points for poor contact.

I had one when the ground stud was painted instead of just galvanized.

It would be wise to have a vehicle wide scan for any codes set.

There has been a recall for ignition switch, so yours could be faulty.

Have you queried Holden service dept about your problem?

Thanks Gary.

Hi again,

Have you got anybody capable of looking at this problem for you?

I would recommend Holden has a look at it for you.

I have fixed many things on Holden cars with no parts replacement needed.

I hope my advice has been of assistance to you.

Kind regards

Gary

I just got the car back from the dealer. They found no codes, electrical grounding or ignition switch problems. I also asked them to check the crank and safe park sensors. The only thing they found was that the battery "failed load test", even though it was performing OK in other respects. A new (expensive) battery was installed and charge rate checked OK. So far the car has started normally several times. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for your advice.

Hi again,

It may well have been the battery, just a little down in capacity.

I've seen many battery low volt conditions and the results of such.

We will take your dealers word this time, and hopefully many happy motoring kms ahead.

Kind regards

Gary

After three days it still starts first go all the time. It seems that it really was the battery.
Thanks for your help.

That's great news.

I have seen this many times with new cars.

Hopefully all good now.

Kind regards
