Hi Bec,

I know Commodore very well, what would you like to know?

The most common engine DTC stored would be P0521 oil pressure sensor range/performance.

Hi again,

Your STFT (short term fuel trims) are maxed out at 25% both banks.

O2 sensors are both saying lean, add more fuel.

I would say you have an "unmeasured" air leak after the MAF.

Look at the ducting between MAF and throttle body for poor fit, loose joint, loose clamps, split purge hose (90 degree hose straight after throttle body).

Could also be a manifold gasket between the two piece manifold.

Has this been a sudden or gradual onset of this issue?

How many kms has the car done now?

Hi Gary. The car has done 210,000km. All hoses and clamps between MAF and throttle body seem all good. I did find a loose vacuum hose the morning after these codes came up on my mates code reader. But has been repaired. It's been chewing fuel for a few months now and seems to be a little more sluggish and running little rough. I had a couple of engine coils replaced a few months ago. I think the power train error flashed up shortly after that. But then disappeared. I then had fuel injectors cleaned and since then the error came back and hasn't gone away. It's also had excess cranking when starting since I've had it. Which I recently read could be due to MAF. I did also read about the paper gasket in the alloy tech engine and how delicate they are. We are going to give the MAF a clean today for a start and see if that makes a difference
AU Auto Mechanic: Gary, Australia Car Mechanic replied 6 years ago

Ok.

I would remove the top of the manifold, clean off the paper gaskets from both surfaces.

Spray some "upper cylinder cleaner" onto the back of the intake valves, and clean out the excess residue with long cotton bud, we have 6 inch long cotton buds for this purpose.

Replace the upper gaskets with the revised rubber/aluminium gasket, (much better gasket), reassemble manifold, clean the MAF, clean the inside of the black plastic inlet duct from the excess engine oil.

Run the engine, go out and "blow the cobwebs out until the smoke clears" from the upper cylinder clean.

Then run it on 98 for a few tanks.

Are the igntion coils genuine from Holden?

Hi again :))Yes ignition coils and fuel injectors were done by Holden dealership.Im thinking the manifold and gasket side of things isn't going to be an easy job so I'll have to book it in to have that done. I understand that's a big job. But I'll do the inlet duct and MAF today. Thank you. U don't think the o2 sensors will need to be replaced also? Do u think all this may assist with the excessive cranking when starting the car also?I really appreciate your advice. I've been reading up on this for a few weeks nowBec
AU Auto Mechanic: Gary, Australia Car Mechanic replied 6 years ago

Don't replace the O2 sensors as yet, more than likely they are ok.

All of this will be why it struggles to start.

The Holden techs will fix it, if they are like me.

All the best.
