My name is ***** ***** I am a professional here at Just Answer. Check and see if the vehicle has a low/weak battery.I have seen issues with vehicles having a weak or dead battery cause this type of fault here and had to replace the battery or recharge the battery to correct this issue. If the battery is or has been checked and is found o.k. let me know so we can continue.

Pete it is a manual car - not an automatic, would a low battery cause the same issues in a manual car? Garry

O.k.,if this is a manual transmission this may not be the battery as an issue here. This sounds more like a gear synchro not lining up to release the shifter in the transmission itself or possibly another internal mechanical fault in the transmission. It is difficult to say for sure from here which is the cause so the transmission will need inspected further to pinpoint and repair the fault here.

With the key issue this can be due to low voltage or that the steering is locked or the ignition cylinder is at fault needing replaced.Try turning the steering wheel hard to one side or the other and holding it there and see if the key then turns. If this does not work then the ignition cylinder will need looked into to see if it needs replaced.
