Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

A scan tool can be used to look at the fuel sender signal and see if it agrees with the gauge to see if the problem is with the gauge itself. It's possible that the problem could be with the gauge but it's more likely to be the fuel sender. Since it's calculating remaining distance congruent with what the gauge is showing that should rule out a gauge problem.

A wiring or connection with the fuel sender's ground or signal wire will affect it's signal. Wiring issues causing gauge accuracy issues are rare but possible, most often a wiring issue would be an open circuit which would prevent the gauge from working at all.

The most likely cause for this is an inaccurate fuel sender.
