Hi I've got a landcruiser 1993 80 series diesel at idle had on off cracking sound at front of engine near front of engine ie pulleys fans my mechanic had a look and said the timing gears r worn he put a new timing belt and greased tensioner now the noise has quietend down but seems to be there all the time and a fast shahs have sound near fan or bottom of timing cover I explained as best I can cheers

Hi There, It certainly sounds like one of the driven bearings is on its way out & needs replacing. The two most likely are the timing belt &/or idler & the water pump bearings. Both are resolved by whole tensioner & water pump replacement.I've used a piece of rubber tube as a stethoscope in the past to locate noise sources with some accuracy.The timing gears/ sprockets could be worn in a high mileage unit, but that is unlikely to be creating noise, unless loose on their keyway or loose securing bolt etc..I hope this points you in the right direction..CheersScott
