Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
There are quite a few things that will cause the trans to go into limp in. When the trans controller sees an issue that can cause potential damage or it thinks it doesn't have complete control it will remove power from the solenoid pack and lock you in second gear.
Possible causes include the trans controller, internal trans issues, solenoids and pressure switches, speed sensors, wiring, and the TIPM (module/fuse box under the hood).
The first step in diagnosing the problem will be to see what fault codes are setting in the TCM. Electrical testing will likely need to be done rom there. The most common cause of limp in on this trans would be the solenoid pack.
