On my 2004 Golf GTI, the cruise control light on the dash cluster stopped working. The cruise control still works fine

Customer: Hi, on my 2004 Golf GTI, the cruise control light on the dash cluster stopped working. The cruise control still works fine when I use the left wiper stalk to set the speed, but there is no longer a light in the cluster showing that cruise control is switched on? I had a look at fuse #11 and #15... neither are blown. Could it possibly be the led light has failed. These things rarely fail. What could it be?

You are right. The cruise control light in the instrument cluster control module is indeed a LED, which, while hardy, can fail. Its only function is to tell the driver the cruise control is ON. fortunately, this LED is not wired in series with the circuit, that's why its failure, annoying as it is, does not affect how the rest of the system works.
VW has no provisions for the replacement of these individual LEDs and recommends cluster replacement instead. However, there are some outfits here in the USA that might be able to repair yours at a lower final cost. Here is one of those outfits:
